The GSG 5 rifles are some of the up and coming tactical 22 long rifles. The
name GSG comes from German Sports Group, which is based out of Germany. The GSG
firearms are an interesting new series on the market, stealing their cosmetic
appearance from the Heckler & Koch MP5 submachine gun, as well as sharing a
wide range of accessories. The GSG 5 firearms were announced during the 2007
Shot Show in Las Vegas, Nevada. Since their debut, firearms enthusiasts have
been lining up to be the first ones at the range to have one; in fact, there is
still a significant backorder on these remarkable firearms. One of the key
selling points for the GSG 5 are the accessories, including folding and
collapsible stocks and many more.
During the first production run of the GSG 5 rifles, there were reports of a
few ejector problems. The importer, ATI, has addressed and fixed these problems
in current production runs. The latest GSG product to be announced is the GSG
AK47, which is also chambered in 22lr, making it another tactical innovation
that is affordable to shoot. At this point, it is still unclear if the GSG AK
series will allow for the user to utilize standard AK47 parts and accessories.
There are even a few companies making the GSG firearms with threaded barrels for
those who want their firearms to both look tactical and to operate in accordance
with it’s sleek design.
GSG isn’t calling it quits with these two products; they have also unveiled
their plans for a full size 1911 chambered in 22lr, which should make for an
interesting range in selection for anybody looking to spend more time at the
range and much less money. The GSG firearms have also quickly become popular
training firearms for tactical units of law enforcement, as well as competition
shooters looking to gain the extra edge on their rivals.
A serious problem that has been occurring with the GSG firearms is the
extremely limited amount of accessories being imported, mostly due to the sheer
volume of these firearms being sold. The void in parts has not yet been filled
as a result of the overwhelming popularity. GSG has focused the majority of it’s
energy on the firearms, filling nooks in their freight with accessories. Where
GSG failed, private industry has picked up the slack; companies like Pro-Mag
have released high capacity magazines to help appease the masses.
Just when you think GSG is alone, Colt unveils their new 22lr which is made
to accept AR15 accessories. The battle for the next popular 22lr is a very
interesting one, with no clear pony to bet on. However I’m putting my money on
the GSG being in the forefront.
GSG firearms are some of the leading innovators in the firearms community,
providing a wide range of tactical knock-offs made in affordable calibers. In my
opinion, the GSG name will be fast-rising, already surpassing the legacy of
Jagger Arms, Armsor, and others who have embarked down the same path.
